The media campaign was not intended just for the johns. The issue should be brought to the attention of the general public, both the national and international. This strategy turned out to be just right. Not only the German media have reported on forced prostitution - from the local “Elmshorner Nachrichten”, to the French “Le Monde” and the Swedish “Afton Bladet” and even on Japanese and American television the media coverage has been overwhelming.
In short - thanks to the open discussion during the Soccer World Cup 2006 there is a greater public sensitivity for the crime of forced prostitution worldwide.
Sensational Media Reports: the number 40,000
Unfortunately, the media have not always stuck to the facts when reporting on this issue. The theoretical number of 40,000 cases of women forced into prostitution has been adopted by the popular press and passed over without questioning. It was no longer differentiated between prostitutes and forced prostitutes because this sounds so much more dramatic.
